This designates the beginning of my journey to the Spartan UltraBeast 2017. I’ll introduce what the Spartan UltraBeast actually is, tell you a bit about my past, what I’m currently doing training wise, and what my plan is.
What is the Spartan UltraBeast?
Every Spartan Race is a baptism. The Ultra Beast is considered an exorcism. The Ultra Beast will cover 26+ miles in the hills of Vermont, with a few twists thrown in to keep it interesting. There is no map or details for the course. Don’t bother asking because we will not tell you. As always, if you’re not sure if you’re ready, or you spend more than one hour per year at Bed, Bath and Beyond, please only register for the Beast. The Ultra Beast will be too much for you. Please do NOT complete a registration if you are not comfortable with these terms.
What is “Road to Spartan”?
This blog is about one man’s journey to train and prepare for the Spartan UltraBeast in 2017. I’ll be outlining the type of training I’m doing, how many miles I’m logging, what gear I’ll be bringing, etc. This blog will serve as a way for people to keep track of me along the way as well as provide me with motivation to keep pushing hard every single day.
Who are you ?
I am a software engineer who likes to train hard in his spare time. I’ve done several local 5K’s, Warrior Dashes, and Tough Mudders. After having done the Virginia and Kentucky Tough Mudders (two of the toughest), I decided I needed a harder challenge to aim for. That’s where the Spartan UltraBeast comes into play. The Spartan Beast is equivalent to a Tough Mudder. But the UltraBeast is essentially doing two of them in a row (plus some).
I originally planned and trained for the Spartan UltraBeast 2014. I wasn’t as well trained as we would have liked, but I was going to give it a go anyway. That is, until I gave myself hyponatremia and so I had to back out. I knew it wasn’t worth risking further damage and I’d be lucky to complete the race in prime shape so there was no way I was going to complete it injured. The next year I ended up having some medical issues that while they aren’t gone, I’ve been cleared to run and train again. While that whole situation sucked, it has given me the motivation to not only aim to do the 2017 UltraBeast but to kick its ass. You may be asking why 2017 and not 2016. That’s because I know where I am at now and it’s just too soon for me to get to level I think I need to be comfortably. I want to have time to work my way up to where I need to be. I hope you’ll enjoy following my progress until that race day comes. And if you feel like you’re up for it, you’re always welcome to join me in doing the race!
For now, I’ll leave it at that. In future posts I’ll describe what gear I’m using, what my current training plan is, what races I’m planning on doing, tips and tricks I’ve learned, etc.
